METALLICS - MEET THE RUNWAY TREND OF 2023

TREND REPORT

The fail-safe autumn trends have been rolling in like they always do, with rich hues, light knits and dark floral prints dominating the A/W Fashion Week runways from New York and London to Milan and Paris. A movement we’d not anticipated so soon however, was that of all things iridescent.

Reflective mesh, mirrored lamé and crystal embellishments – once signifiers of autumn and winter alone have shone strong within trend forecasts this year and kept us in a soiree state of mind ever since 2022. Returning to their traditional seasons, the must-have metallics right now bring anticipation for red carpets, after parties and any excuse to celebrate as the nights get longer and the invites get greater.

Taking on the high-shine trend might feel slightly futuristic for some, which is why we’ve broken down the different ways precious metals can be incorporated into your going-out wardrobe – from subtle shimmers to head-to-toe glow.

THE NAYA DRESS
There’s no wrong way to approach the brilliance as fashion designers known for their influence brought minimalist and maximalist interpretations to the trend this Fashion Week season – as always inspiring and easily traced back to their established houses.

“September is the January of fashion,” as a famed former Vogue editor once declared and the kickoff in the concrete city only strengthened their statement. New York made gold their metallic of choice, styling the shade casually, in keeping with their modern, all-American spirit. Think Michael Kors' sequined mini skirts paired with relaxed white shirts and swinging mini dresses designed in gilded floral lace. Golden hour drew on with the treasurable brooches and embroideries at Carolina Herrera as well as the belt buckles and one wish list-worthy foiled bag presented at Brandon Maxwell.

THE GALAXY SHIMMER DRESS
Fast forwarding through Alexander McQueen's silvery threaded dresses in London and Schiaparelli’s signature gold brocades in Milan, Paris Fashion Week saw a quieter take that illuminated primarily black and burgundy silhouettes. Louis Vuitton demonstrated subtlety best, with 90s-inspired slip dresses, diagonally striped and sheer but iridescent to say ‘look at me’ in a more nonchalant manner. Entirely different to the “glittering goddesses” presented at Paco Rabanne, shining in fantastical fringing, layered sequins and mirror-like mesh with the occasional sparkly pair of gladiator sandals to remind us that metallics can be introduced through footwear as well as ready-to-wear.
